Johanne Savoie was born in France and moved to Edmonton,
She has since lived in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia
and has travelled to New Brunswick, Florida, Hawaii, Mexico, Cuba, the Caribbean,
California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington State, Scotland and the Black Country, (hehehe)
Europe (a lot of it), and Japan. When asked, "Where are you from?" she'll just look at you funny.
Johanne began acting and singing in public when she was six and has performed in at least one show a year since.
She began doing Improv in 1977, and Standup Comedy
in 1989. She has taught both professionally, and is an excellent drama/monologue
coach. (If she likes you, she'll even show you her range of impressions, from Edith
Bunker to "South Park"'s Cartman. It's uncanny...) In 1992, Johanne was instrumental
in bringing the first annual International Improv tournament to Just For Laughs.
She was head judge of that event, as well as covering several roles behind the scenes.
Oddly, Johanne came to national attention in Canada not as a comedienne, but as a citizen confronting then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien about the GST. The exchange, considered a "David and Goliath" story, (Johanne was then working as a waitress) became one of that year's top news items, and became a factor in the loss of twenty seats for the Liberals in the following elections. It also marked the beginning of Johanne's bizarre attraction to run-on sentences.
Future plans for GOJOTV include a studio production of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" aimed at students, and the airing of "Europa!"'s adventures. But the way will also be littered with surprises... So stay tuned!
